Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer – Solar PV to support engineering, design, and lifecycle management of utility-scale solar projects. This role covers the full project lifecycle from development through construction, commissioning, and operations, ensuring technical excellence, quality, compliance, and optimal system performance.
Key Responsibilities
Project Engineering & Lifecycle Management
- Support all engineering aspects for large-scale solar PV projects from early development through execution and operations.
- Coordinate with construction teams to ensure designs are implemented correctly and respond to technical site queries.
- Perform root cause analysis, troubleshooting, and technical investigations as needed.
- Provide technical input into project budgets and lifecycle planning.
Technical Design & Analysis
- Develop solar PV system designs using computer design tools.
- Conduct energy yield assessments using PVSyst and create long-term performance forecasts.
- Support due diligence, risk assessments, and fatal-flaw analyses during feasibility stages.
- Recommend engineering improvements aligned with project objectives and best practices.
Stakeholder & Commercial Management
- Coordinate with external consultants, EPCs, subcontractors, and internal teams to meet quality, budget, and schedule targets.
- Support technical negotiations with suppliers and contractors for new projects and procurement.
- Assist in developing RFPs and reviewing technical proposals.
- Contribute to technical documentation including EPC contracts, specifications, manuals, and plans.
Process Improvement & Strategic Development
- Contribute to building the internal solar engineering capability and improving engineering processes and tools.
- Standardise internal documentation, templates, and methodologies for better efficiency and performance.
- Drive value engineering, innovation, and LCoE optimisation across designs and processes.
Quality, Compliance & Reporting
- Participate in design reviews to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all design aspects meet statutory codes, standards, and policies.
- Maintain comprehensive project documentation, meeting minutes, and correspondence.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering.
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience in utility-scale solar PV engineering.
- Proficiency with solar design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, PVSyst).
- Strong knowledge of South African industry standards, codes, and grid requirements.
- Experience with MS Office Suite (Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint).
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with time and budget constraints.
Preferred / Advantageous:
- 5+ years of professional experience (professionally registered ideal).
- Experience with wind, BESS, or high-voltage infrastructure.
