Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Leadership & Management
- Directly manage Team Leaders — conducting daily performance reviews, coaching/mentoring/developing them, ensuring consistent application of company procedures and standards, and reviewing/approving disciplinary recommendations
Operational Planning
- Conduct manpower planning across all shifts, allocating resources to customer demand, ensuring all stations are adequately manned, reviewing shift loading/staffing requirements, and coordinating deployment for new projects
Quality Management
- Own zero customer complaints and zero line stoppages attributable to CBS activities
- Ensure closure of audit findings within required timeframes; review/approve root cause analyses; and drive continual improvement initiatives
- The client's 8D/corrective-action timeframes apply to audit-finding closure: D1–D3 (immediate technical containment) and D4–D8 (root cause and permanent corrective action) within 10 working days
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure compliance with all SOPs, PFDs and customer requirements; verify (audit schedules) are completed; ensure legal and safety compliance; and monitor adherence to FIFO, 24-hour lists and work instructions
Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Act as the escalation point for customer concerns, communicate operational performance to management
- Coordinate actions with the Projects and Quality departments, and attend customer meetings when required
Performance Management
- Verify shift reports submitted by Team Leaders
- Analyse trends and process flows to identify and implement improvement opportunities
- Proactively escalate operational risks
- Review KPI performance
Training & Development
- Ensure training matrices are maintained, and only qualified personnel are deployed
- Verify completion of training/re-training programmes and conduct competency reviews of Team Leaders
Labour, Cost & Productivity Ownership
- Own labour costs, resource utilisation, PPE & consumables spend, productivity, and manpower planning — tracked via labour efficiency (hours sold vs hours paid, direct labour recovery %, inspector efficiency %), consumables/PPE cost vs budget, and operational productivity (throughput achieved, absenteeism %, overtime cost)
Key KPIs
- Zero customer complaints, Client KPIs, audit compliance rate, labour utilisation efficiency, absenteeism management, training compliance, shift staffing compliance, safety performance, and reporting accuracy
Job Specification
Qualifications
- NQF Level 6 in Operations Management, Quality Management, Industrial Engineering or equivalent, or extensive experience in the above duties and responsibilities
Experience
- Minimum 5 years' supervisory experience in an automotive manufacturing, quality or logistics environment, including direct experience managing shift-based teams
Knowledge:
- Manpower/shift planning, labour efficiency and productivity metrics (hours sold vs paid, direct labour recovery, inspector efficiency).
- Root cause analysis and corrective action processes, and the company's SOPs/PFDs
- Training matrices and competency management for shift teams.
- The service-category cost/time classification structure (Classes A–H) and the RASIC accountability model, relevant to shift staffing and service categorisation.
- The contract's KPI and escalation framework — the ≥97% monthly KPI threshold and the client's four-level escalation model — since this role owns audit-finding closure and reporting accuracy. Business and operations management principles, financial/P&L management, and budgeting
