Job Description

Our esteemed client, a leading South African professional service enterprise specialising in power transmission and distribution infrastructure, invites applications for the role of Senior Substation Engineer. With a commitment to excellence and sustainability, our client is dedicated to driving progress in the energy industry. This position presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the planning, design, and execution of high-voltage power transmission and distribution projects.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSc Eng. or B. Eng.) with 7 years of relevant post-qualification technical experience. OR
  • B Tech in Electrical Engineering with 10 years of relevant post-qualification technical experience at the engineering level.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Professional Registration: ECSA registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Engineering Technologist.

 

Related Minimum Experience:

  • 7 to 10 years of post-qualification technical experience in HV power transmission and distribution infrastructure within the power utility or renewable energy sector.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and design HV power transmission and distribution infrastructure from 33kV up to 765kV.
  • Handle multiple projects and provide guidance in developing engineering deliverables for electrical substation projects.
  • Perform necessary calculations and studies, including power systems studies on utility and industrial/commercial power transmission and distribution systems.
  • Engage with project stakeholders and coordinate overall design packages and requirements.
  • Provide direction and guidance to junior engineers, drafters, and designers.
  • Ensure design schedules are met and provide regular status feedback.
  • Coordinate and review technical contract documents and perform contractor design reviews.
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to Health, Safety, and the Environment.
  • Manage design changes, and modify design drawings, and documents accordingly.
  • Coordinate FAT and SAT planning and execution.
  • Provide engineering support during construction and resolve technical queries from contractors.
  • Plan and coordinate pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
  • Prepare expressions of interest (EOIs), tenders, and requests for quotations.
  • Adhere to the requirements of the company's Quality Management System.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of processes and Quality Management System.

 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Detailed knowledge of power utilisation equipment and related structural requirements.
  • Project administration and coordination skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Problem-solving and team-working skills.
  • Computer literacy with sound knowledge of Microsoft Office and Bentley Microstation.
  • Familiarity with national and international engineering codes and standards.
  • Experience in the power utility industry, particularly Eskom experience.

 

Desired Additional Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in principles of project management.
  • Experience with DigSilent and PSSE.
  • Familiarity with MS Projects.
  • Experience in Protection, Metering, Telecommunication, and Control systems.
  • Supplementary qualification or experience in Project Management.
